She was married to Edwin BOLLES WFT Est. 1845-1890 in ?.(3) Obituary Notice MRS. RELIANCE REED In the death of Mrs. Reliance Reed, widow of the late Lockwood L. Reed of Moriah Center, the county loses one of its eldest and noblest citizens. Mrs. Reed died Feb. 14th, 1927, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. B. Phillips, in Crown Point, where she had lived for the 18 years since the tragic death of her husband in 1908. Reliance Able, the subject of this sketch, was born in Fairfield, Vt., June 17, 1833, and thus at the time of her death had nearly attained her 94th birthday. When about 22 years of age she was married to David Foster, whith whom she lived at Bakersfield and Enosburg Falls, Vt., until the time of the Civil War. Mr. Foster enlisted in the Civil War and died of fever in Maryland. On March 14, 1864, Mrs. Foster was married to Lockwood L. Reed, and thus became the step-mother of three children, two of whom are living, W. E., whose address is not known, and Etta M. West of South Glens Falls, N. Y. Mr. and Mrs. Reed lived all their married life in the same home at Moriah Center, N. Y. To them were born five children, two of whom died in infancy. The three others who survive are Charles L., of West Addison, Vt., Dr. S. Arthur of Port Henry, and Mrs. R. B. Phillips of Crown Point, who most carefully and tenderly cared for her mother during the sunset years. Mrs. Reed was indeed a most remarkable woman. Though of advancing years, was in full possession of her faculties. Her mind was keen and her heart warm. She never lost interest in life, nor sympathy with those who were still in the active years. She came of sturdy stock. That she was possessed of physical strength is evidenced by the fact that she endured the strain of well-nigh 100 years, and was confined to her bed less than 24 hours before her death. Morally she was of stalwart statue, ever true to the traditions and principles of the worthy ancestry from which she came. Those who knew her, recall her unswearving fidelity to the right, and themselves are inspired to larger faithfulness. Of her spiritual life it is a joy to write. For 60 years she was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in which she delighted to serve and worship. Her attendance on the services was marked by regularity and reverence. That she was in constant and intimate fellowship with Christ her Lord was ever evident. Her faith was calm and confident--like an anchor which held steady in every exigency of life. Her life was a blessing and memory of her is an abiding benedicition. written by Rev. Homer F. Titus TRIBUTE TO MOTHER REED by L. Mae Reed Mother! We love to think of thee No one can fill thy place We remember thy Cheery words each day Each day thy happy face. Always, in thy loom of life Thou has woven threads of gold Golden words and golden deeds Influencing lives untold. The pattern you have woven Was filled with acts sublime God grant the pattern of our lives May measure up to thine. RELIANCE WEBSTER REED Minutes from the original meeting of the Reliance Webster Reed Society In memory of our mother, Reliance Webster Reed, this society was formed on November 28th, 1928, at the home of Charles and Mae Reed in Addition, Vermont. The object being to revere her memory and to continue our association with each other in friendship and love as she would like us to do. May we profit from her example of faithfulness and loyalty to the best and thruest in life. Reliance Abel was born in Fairfield, Vermont, June 17, 1833. At the age of twelve she lost her mother. Being the oldest of four children, she took her mother's place as well as a child of that age could helping to keep the family together until her father remarried. When a young woman she taught school and "boarded around" often sharing her room, and even her bed with members of the family. As she had French boys and girls she learned some French from them which shows her eagerness to learn. In fact she counted that day lost in which she did not learn something helpful before the day was done. On March 14, 1864, Mrs. Foster (Reliance Abell) was married to Lockwood L. Reed of Moriah, New York. She became the stepmother of his children but all thought of her as "mother" in every deed. One Etta M. West of Glens Falls is still living. She was bereaved of her husband on July 26, 1908. His death was caused by an automobile accident. She passed the remaining years of her life, eighteen and one-half years, with her daughter, Alice Reed Phillips. Her death occurred February 14, 1927, thus she was nearly 94 years old. She was confined to her bed less than 24 hours. Her death was symbolic of her life. She quietly went to sleep. She was not, for God took her. She lived almost a century. What changes she saw. As a girl she helped make the tallow candles which was their only light. When the lamp with kerosene came, it was a great change. Lastly, into the daughter's home, she enjoyed the light of electricity, a long way from the candle. As a child she rode to church and school in an ox cart. When she was married to Lockwood Reed, the long trek, from Enosburg to Moriah, was taken with horse and sleigh, for it was in winter. What a long journey which now we can take in a few hours. She, no doubt, saw the first railroads in our country and later the automoboile. But with all the changes of life, she was ever steadfast and true. She was a member of the Methodist Church and delighted to serve her Lord in the Church service and in her every day life for to her Christianity meant Christian Living. As her pastor said, her life was a blessing and memory of her an abiding benediction. Parents: Calvin ABELL and Hannah Euphemia WEBSTER.
