Mary Mayo was the daughter of Captain Samuel Mayo and Thomasine (Lumpkin) his wife. Captain Samuel Mayo, mariner, was born about 1625, settled at Boston about 1658, and died 1663 or 4. His wife Thomasine was born 1626, and died June 16, 1709. She m. 2d. Mr. John Sunderland of Harwich. Captain Samuel Mayo was son of Rev. John of Boston and Barnstable, and at last of Yarmouth. Mary Mayo was baptised at Barnstable, Feb. 3, 1649-50. She was a twin to Samuel Mayo, Jr., who was baptised at the same time. Their sister Elizabeth m. Rev. Samuel Treat of Eastham in 1671. Mary (Mayo) Bangs died Jan. 26, 1711, at Brewster, aged 66 or 68.

John Mayo, Barnstable, . . . came in 1638 probably as he was sworn a freeman 3 March 1640, and ordained 15 April following. He brought from England his children Hannah, Samuel, John, Nathaniel, and, perhaps, Elizabeth, who may, however, have been born on this side of the water. He removed to Eastham 1646, thence, discouraged at Eastham, he was drawn to Boston, where he was instituted 9 November 1655, first minister of the second or North Church and Michael Powell ordained ruling elder the same day. He was dismissed 1673, in advanced age, after having more than twenty years had joint service with Increase Mather. He went to Barnstable, there, and at Eastham and Yarmouth lived the short residue of his days with one or another of his children and died at Yarmouth May 1676, leaving widow Thomasine, who died 26 February 1682, but we know not whether she had been his first wife in England. The agreement 15 June 1676, for settlement of the small estate between widow, children and grandchildren is on record. His son John was the only son who outlived him.
