Amos with five brothers and his father served in the Revolutionary War. In 1780 Amos moved to Cambridge, Vt., he surveyed that town in 1783, and built the first sawmill in Cambridge in 1784. He moved, with his family and others to Enosburgh in 1797. The first deed recorded in Enosburgh is by Amos Fassett to Benjamin Fassett on April 1. 1797. Amos died suddenly in St. Albans in 1810 while serving as associate judge. His widow, Anna, was one of the organizing members of Enosburgh Congregational Church in 1811 and their sons Alvin, Anson, and Plinney were baptized in that church in 1811. (5) Alvin, son of Amos and Anna, was born in Cambridge, Vt. in June 1793. He died in 1862. He was a corporal in the War of 1812 and his brother Hiram, a musician in the war. Alvin fathered four children who lived to marry, the third of whom was - (6) Gardner Smith Fassett, born in 1831 (I believe in Sheldon) and died in January 1917. He had three children who lived to marry. The youngest was my mother, Mary Stone Fassett, born in Enosburgh in December 1874. One son, William Gardner Fassett lived in Enosburgh, Cambridge, and finally Sheldon. Gardner S. Fassett was a member of the board of trustees of the University of Vermont; supervised the building of Morrill Hall and was secretary of the board of control at Vermont Experimental Station. He introduced the Jersey cow to northern Vermont. He lectured widely around Vermont to folk urging the new and improved techniques of dairying. He was clerk of the Enosburgh Center Church for nearly 48 years and also held many town offices. He served one term in the Vermont Legislature and was once a candidate for Lt. Governor on the Prohibition ticket. He was a carpenter, dairyman, sugar maker, and progressive farmer. He had on his small farm a fair number ofapple trees which he personally grafted. Although not a soldier, he was asked to guard the North Enosburgh bridge after the St. Albans Raid, in the Civil War. Following his orders, he called out "Who goes there?" three times, and when no reply came, he shot - and killed a large dog. Although I was only 11 when he died, at our home where he lived his last years [presumably after Lucy Maria Eaton Titus's death in 1911], I remember his largely attended funeral at the church in Enosburgh Center - the sled hearse horse drawn ahead had to be helped by the bearers to avoid tipping over in the deep drifted snow. Grandpa Fassett was against swearing, drinking, smoking, card playing, cheating. lieing, as well as all of the generally accepted immoralities and sins of mankind. He was a good man. alert, with subtle humor, keen perception and utter honesty. from Enosburgh Vermont, Geraw, Janice Fleury, The Enosburgh Historical Society, Inc., Enosburgh Falls, Vermont, 1985 Obituary Notice GARDNER S.
